SEOUL -- South Korean smartphone users hailed a decision by Kakao Talk, the country's dominant smartphone messenger app, to adopt a feature that will allow them to retract unread messages.

Kakao said Wednesday that its messenger app would add the "unsend" feature soon after a major update to change its user interface (UI). About 4.7 million people, or 92 percent of the population, use the company's messenger app.

Demand for the "unsend" feature has been high among South Korean smartphone users who have experienced embarrassing moments when unwanted messages were sent by mistake.

"Kakao should have adopted this feature a long time ago," wrote tkfkdgo0124, a user from South Korean web portal Daum. Another user nicknamed Koje said: "This feature should be adopted right away because I make frequent mistakes to send wrong messages." Many other online community users welcomed Kakao's move.

Some smartphone messenger apps such as Instagram, Telegram and LINE provide "unsend" message features, allowing users to retract messages.
