SEOUL -- Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, a key contractor in South Korea's energy industry, signed a deal worth 1.5 trillion won ($1.3 billion) to participate in an energy project to build thermal power stations in Java, the geographic and economic center of Indonesia.

A memorandum of understanding was signed Monday between Doosan Heavy and PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT) at a business forum in Seoul ahead of a summit between Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in. The Indonesian leader arrived in Seoul Sunday on a three-day state visit.

The ceremony was attended by Indonesia's industry minister Airlangga Hartarto and South Korea's Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Paik Un-kyu. IRT is a joint venture between PT Indonesia Power and PT Barito Pacific to build two 1,000-megawatt Jawa 9 and 10 power stations by 2023.

Doosan Heavy will build ultra-supercritical (USC) power plants which operate at temperatures and pressures above the critical point of water and require less coal per megawatt-hour, leading to lower emissions, higher efficiency and lower fuel costs.

Other South Korean firms signed separate MOUs with Indonesian partners to participate in the construction of hydropower plants. In March, Samsung C&T secured an order worth about 510 billion won to build a 1,760 megawatt combined cycle power plant in Cilamaya east of Jakarta by September 2021.
