SEOUL -- Escorted by patrol motorbikes, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un shared a ride for an open-top car parade through the streets of Pyongyang, lined by tens of thousands of citizens.

As the parade vehicle glided through the center of Pyongyang, Moon and Kim returned big smiles and waved at the welcoming crowd who took to the street with North Korean flags, paper flowers and unification flags which represent all of Korea.

TV footages from Pyongyang showed the crowd shouting "Homeland reunification!" as the motorcade moved slowly to Paekhwawon, a state guest house in Pyongyang.

After lunch, the two leaders are to hold their first meeting. It was Moon's first trip to Pyongyang and he was the third South Korean leader who has visited North Korea. Kim Jong-un's late father, Kim Jong-il, met with South Korea's late presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007 respectively.
