SEOUL -- Two tons of pine mushrooms sent by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a special gift arrived in South Korea hours before President Moon Jae-in returned home from a historic three-day visit to the communist North.

A cargo plane carried Kim's gift to a military airport in Seoul on Thursday morning, Yoon Young-chan, a senior presidential press secretary, told reporters, adding the matsutake bearing the fragrance of soil in the North would be handed out to families torn apart by the 1950-53 war.

Yoon said some 4,000 elderly people who have been waiting for reunions with their loved ones in the North would receive 500 grams of mushrooms each. North Korea sent mushrooms to South Korea in previous inter-Korean summits in 2000 and 2007.
