SEOUL -- South Korea will officially ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to discuss a joint move by the two Koreas to host the 2032 Summer Olympics as agreed in the inter-Korean summit this month, the presidential office said Friday.

The decision was made at a meeting of a committee formed to discuss measures to carry out a declaration reached in the September 19 summit in Pyongyang between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom told reporters.

"For the joint hosting of the 2032 Summer Olympics by the two Koreas, we decided to make it a formal IOC agenda," Kim said, adding the venue for the 2032 event is expected to be decided in 2021. U.S. President Donald Trump has welcomed the outcome of the inter-Korean summit, saying it was "very exciting" that the two Koreas agreed to file a bid to jointly host the 2032 Olympics.

The two Koreas will also discuss their joint participation in the preliminaries for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the spokesman said.  IOC President Thomas Bach has supported the creation of joint inter-Korean teams in international sports events.
