SEOUL -- Amid intensifying competition to release the world's first foldable smartphone, LG Electronics has decided to take a step back and take its time to develop a product with good consumer values.

LG's mobile division head Hwang Jeong-hwan told reporters at a showcase event for V40 in Seoul on Thursday that the company would develop and release foldable smartphones just the right time.

"We will release the foldable smartphone at the right time when we can provide good customer values rather than forcing its release to grab the world's first title," Hwang said.

As its name states, the foldable smartphone can be folded to minimize its size. Data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's data, released in July this year, showed LG's foldable phone patent features a hinge mechanism. Because LG's foldable smartphone has cameras installed right next to its hinges, the phone can be folded slightly so that it can independently stand upright, similar to a tripod.

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest smartphone maker, and China's Huawei are in the race to release the world's first foldable smartphone. According to various media reports, Samsung will unveil its first foldable smartphone at a meeting of developers in November.
