SEOUL -- The Seoul Central District Court has granted provisional seizure of 4 billion won (US$3.54 million) worth of assets of BMW Korea in connection with a damages suit filed by BMW owners over a series of engine fires, a law firm said Friday.

The law firm, Heon, requested the seizure when it filed the damages lawsuit on behalf of 1,228 BMW owners in August, and the court accepted the seizure request on Thursday, the law firm said. A second lawsuit was filed this week, bringing the total number of BMW owners participating in the two suits to 2,074 and the total amount of damages sought to more than 31 billion won.

Seized assets include 1 billion won of lease deposit for the office in central Seoul of the South Korean unit of the German carmaker and three billion won of lease deposit for a BMW driving center in Incheon, west of Seoul. The law firm said it's considering filing for provisional seizure of other BMW Korea assets, including the BMW parts distribution center in the city of Anseong, south of Seoul, and a cultural facility in Songdo of Incheon.
