SEOUL -- Google will team up with LG Electronics to create an intelligent urban space using artificial intelligence and other future technologies in smart towns to be built in South Korea. Any targeted area was not mentioned, but Google and LG have voiced their interest in an international commercial and business town in the western port city of Incheon.

Google said Thursday at a technology conference in Seoul that it would cooperate with LG and real estate development companies in a joint project to set up smart towns. Rhee In-jong, vice president of Google's IoT division said that LG is strong in smart devices and Google has strengths in AI and machine learning. Smart towns or smart cities use various sensors and software to collect and share data. When a traffic camera spots a kid at a crossing, the smart town's system would control traffic lights to provide extra crossing time. Buildings would have improved energy efficiency by monitoring and controlling temperatures while home dwellers could use Google's IoT core to interact with connected home appliances.

In January this year, a presidential committee for the Fourth Industrial Revolution designated two areas in the central city of Sejong and the southern port city of Busan as test beds for smart city platforms that would feature future technologies such as autonomous driving, grid-based energy control and AI-based disaster control.
