SEOUL -- Hyosung Heavy Industries, the power and industrial wing of South Korea's Hyosung Group, has built the world's largest voltage stabilizer for power substations. The company vowed to export its products after accumulating experience and technology at home.

Hyosung Heavy said in a statement Friday that it has finished the construction of two 400Mvar-class static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) at substations operated by the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) in Shinyeongju some 170 kilometers (105 miles) southeast of Seoul and Shinchungju about 105 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

The company said STATCOMs would stabilize the voltage of electricity networks which transfer power to Seoul and surrounding areas. They can save about 300 billion won (262 million) worth of money annually. "With new STATCOMs, we can improve transmission efficiency by about 10 percent, compared to the existing transmission lines," a KEPCO official was quoted as saying.

Before going abroad, Hyosung Heavy and KEPCO would test high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC), a next-generation electric power technology to convert alternating current into high-voltage DC.
