SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group unveiled a solar system which uses the roof of a car to support the power sources of eco-friendly vehicles and enhance the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines.

Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors are accelerating the development of first-generation solar roofs for eco-friendly vehicles to be launched after 2019. They are developing three types of solar system. A first-generation solar roof is a form of silicon solar cells mounted on the roof of hybrid models to charge up to 60 percent of batteries per day.

Unlike opaque first-generation solar roofs, the second-generation translucent solar roofs for internal combustion engine models were developed as a transmissive and openable option for consumers who want a sense of openness. Translucent solar cells will be mounted in a panoramic sunroof.

The translucent roof panel can be used to charge the battery of an internal combustion engine or an additional solar battery. It can cope with environmental regulations on the total amount of CO2 emissions.

The third-generation lightweight solar system integrates solar cells on the hood and the roof steel sheet to produce 100W per hour. It can be transformed into the vehicle's reference voltage and used to lower the vehicle alternator load.
