LS Mtron develops new 5G antenna for autonomous driving

SEOUL -- LS Mtron, a South Korean producer of industrial machinery and high-tech components, developed an omnidirectional fifth generation (5G) antenna that could be used for autonomous vehicles. Commercial production will begin next year.

The 5G antenna uses a relatively high-frequency band to increase the bandwidth of information transmission and reception, but its signal connection is difficult because the linearity of the frequency is good but the range is narrow.

While conventional antennas transmit signals by tracking a wide area from time to time, causing time delays and generating heat, LS Mtron said its antennas transmit and receive radio waves only in a certain area required by the vehicle. LS Mtron's antennas are about 50 percent cheaper and 80 percent smaller than conventional ones.

"The 5G antenna in automotive communication is an essential element for autonomous driving," LS Mtron CEO Kim Yeon-soo said, vowing to lead the mass production of 5G antennas for autonomous vehicles. 5G connectivity is essential for self-driving vehicles which need to monitor traffic, avoid obstacles and safely navigate their way through busy city streets.
