SEOUL -- The debut album of IZ*ONE, a new band grouping 12 South Korean and Japanese girls picked through a joint audition, has topped Oricon's weekly albums chart and weekly digital albums chart in Japan, according to the group's agency.

"COLOR*IZ", the group's debut album released on October 29, has gained popularity in South Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. "The popularity of IZ*ONE was reflected in the album sales in Japan," Off The Record said in a statement Tuesday.

IZ*ONE sold some 80,000 copies of COLOR*IZ in South Korea during the first week of its release, more than I.O.I, a project group formed in 2016 through
Produce 101, a cable TV music audition show.

IZ*ONE was created through "Produce 48", the successor of Produce 101, that aired from June until August this year. Among 96 singer trainees, nine South Korean and three Japanese girls were selected for the news project band.
