SEOUL -- KT, a top telecom company involved in a state project to commercialize South Korea's ultra-fast mobile service, will set up a fifth-generation (5G) network in a simulated city which is under construction in a state project to test autonomous vehicles.

KT said Wednesday it signed a deal with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KTSA), a state body, to establish a 5G network in "K-City" to be built in Hwaseong south of Seoul by the end of this year. The simulated city will have a highway, parking lots, local communities, living areas and complicated urban road conditions.

KT and KTSA will make a joint research in self-driving solutions based on a 5G network. "I expect K-City's 5G network to become a driving force for the era of autonomous driving," KTSA director Kwon Byung-yoon said in a statement. KTSA vowed to open K-City to all those seeking to test and develop self-driving technologies.
