SEOUL -- In an effort to provide ultra-high-definition video (UHD) streaming in real time, SK Broadband, a Seoul-based broadband internet access provider, has developed a super-fast communication technology using a combination of coaxial cables and fiber optics.

The company said in a statement Monday that its new technology can transfer UHD 8K videos to on-demand internet protocol TV (IPTV) set-top boxes in real-time. 8K video, the highest display resolution available for commercial TVs, has a screen resolution of about four times larger than that of 4K video.

Previous Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC), the combined technology of fiber optics and cables, could only send 4K video files at the speed of 35 Megabits per second (Mbps) because it used a bandwidth with the maximum speed of 50Mbps. 8K video files require at least 120 Mbps.

SK Broadband's new technology links bandwidths together to increase their ability to withstand more data traffic, allowing the maximum data transfer speed of 150Mbps.
