SEOUL -- Naver Labs, the artificial intelligence wing of South Korea's top web portal, partnered with Qualcomm Technologies, the U.S. producer of semiconductor chips, to develop new technologies related to robotics and autonomous driving.

Naver Labs said Tuesday that a memorandum of understanding was signed with the American company. The South Korean company will use Qualcomm's chips and solution technology, but concrete information on their cooperation will be disclosed in January at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

"Collaboration between the two companies is expected to enable new technology innovations that have never been tried before," Naver Labs CEO Song Chang-hyun said in a statement.

Qualcomm Technologies also manufactures antennas for smartphones and develops a virtual reality software development kit. Naver Labs provides real-time translating service and develops technology on autonomous driving and machine learning.

Naver Labs has forged a robotics partnership with Here, an international map platform company in Amsterdam, to create indoor maps. In August, the company increased the paid-in capital of its French subsidiary which researches on computer vision, natural language processing and machine learning.
