SEOUL -- South Korea's state research institute has developed a lightning-fast internet technology capable of downloading a 3GB movie file in a blink of an eye, which is ideal for fifth-generation (5G) services, virtual reality and augmented reality.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said in a statement Tuesday that its researchers have developed a core source technology to boost the current maximum internet speed of 2.5Gbps to 25Gbps. The new technology enables the transfer of a small data packet in one-thousandth of a second.

Commercialization of the technology named "Tic-TOC" (Time Controlled-Tactile Optical Access) is possible next year by using existing optical communication cables for internet connection and upgrading communication devices.

Also, ETRI has developed a latency control technology which can be installed into a single device with an optical cable transmitting module. The optical network device boosts the internet speed of buildings.

According to researchers, the new internet technology would vitalize interactive VR and AR markets which require fast network connections. ETRI researchers said their technology was effective in the remote controlling of robots because they reacted quickly with no latency.
