World's first 5G barista robot appears in unmanned cafe in Seoul

SEOUL -- A mobile robot receives takes orders and makes coffee at an unmanned cafe connected through a 5G network. This is the world's first 5G barista robot which recognizes visitors, sends the situation in the cafe to the manager with high-quality video.

South Korea's top telecom company, KT, applied its 5G wireless network to the cafe called "B;eat" which opened Tuesday in an office building in southern Seoul. The robot equipped with a mobile hot spot (MHS) operates on signals from a 5G base station.

"In the age of 5G, intelligent robots will be a new platform to completely innovate our lives and industries," Park Hyun-jin, head of KT's 5G business division, said in a statement. For the first time in the world, South Korean firms offered 5G services partially in big cities on December 1. Commercial services for ordinary clients would begin in March next year.

The 5G cafe sends the robot's status and information on the origin of materials, shelf life and hygiene can be verified in digital signage in real time. Later, KT plans to add voice recognition and artificial intelligence functions to the robot so that customers can make voice orders and receive more customized service.
