SEOUL -- South Korea's four government bodies will launch a joint project this year to develop a smart road lighting platform aimed at turning simple road lighting into a safety net that senses traffic accidents and alerts pedestrians and vehicles through smartphones.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Monday that the three-year project would also involve three other ministries -- the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. A notice would be issued in February to select platform developers.

The project is based on a concept that allows vehicles and pedestrians to get information and cope immediately when a sudden accident occurs in crosswalks, crossroads or tunnels. The transport ministry plans to apply a new streetlight system first to places which are vulnerable to traffic accidents or to school zones and other areas where a high level of safety are required.

By integrating sensor and information communication technology, the system would illuminate information on the road through digital signs or uses smart infrastructure technology to transmit information to vehicles and pedestrians through smartphones, the ministry said.

Beyond the simple role of securing visibility for safety, road lighting will play a role as a hub to cope with traffic accidents based on advanced convergence technology, the ministry said.
