SEOUL --  "Extreme Job" has swept over the South Korean box-office dominated by blockbuster action films, garnering more than 10 million moviegoers for the first time in six years as a comedy film.

A film surpassing 10 million viewers is important in South Korea with a population of about 51.8 million. The popularity of Extreme Job is rare in South Korea's movie scene. It was created with a modest budget of 6.5 billion won ($5.7 million) and had no prominent actors and actress.

Extreme Job directed by Lee Byoung-heon depicts a story about a team of undercover detectives opening a fried chicken store for a drug-bust operation. The detectives try to catch drug criminals, but their store receives unexpected attention from gourmets for its tasty fried chicken.

Data released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed the film garnered 10,528,856 moviegoers as of February 6, just two weeks after it premiered on January 23. So far, it has earned 91.5 billion won in ticket sales. The film attracted 5.25 million viewers for five days since the Lunar New Year's holiday season began on February 2.
