SEOUL -- If a 5G ecosystem for mobile devices comes this year in South Korea, K-pop fans will be able to enjoy the streaming of high-quality live videos from BTS and other celebrities through V Live, an app run by South Korea's top web portal service company Naver.

It is common to use 4G networks to broadcast HD videos, but 5G is ideal for transferring large UHD data files. In January, KT broadcast the last concert of K-pop boy band Wanna One using 5G technology and ultra-high definition (UHD) 4K video cameras.

Naver told a forum in Seoul Friday that it would support a 4K live video streaming service through V Live if South Korea launches 5G commercial services for smartphone users in March. 4K refers to a horizontal display resolution of about 4,000 pixels.

V Live allows celebrities to broadcast live videos on the internet and live chat with fans from around the globe. The app with a variety of language options has hundreds of channels associated with K-pop stars and broadcasts programs ranging from live chat sessions with fans to performances and reality shows.

By using deep learning, Naver also plans to develop technology that changes video quality according to network conditions and plays seamlessly.

Last year, V Live introduced high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) codec. HEVC is a video compression standard that allows substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate. Codec, a device or computer program for encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal, is used in video conferencing, streaming media and video editing applications.
