SEOUL -- LGU+, a mobile carrier in South Korea, forged a strategic partnership with Hatch Entertainment, a game streaming company, to cooperate in developing and commercializing 5G-based virtual reality games. Hatch is a subsidiary of Rovio Entertainment, a Finnish company known for Angry Birds mobile games.

LGU+ said in a statement Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Hatch to release a VR game for 5G smartphones this year. LGU+ and Hatch will also work on developing games which would interlink with Android TV, Google's smartphone-like operating system for digital players.

LGU+ and Hatch Entertainment, a VR game developer, can work together to introduce "more complete gaming services," LGU+'s future and converged division head Lee Sang-min was quoted as saying.

For a flat monthly fee, Hatch's cloud-gaming service provides subscribers with more than 100 games. Subscribers can also play a limited selection of games for free. Hatch's service allows users to play seamlessly between mobile devices and TV. The streaming service is ideal for 5G mobile networks.

"We're excited to begin working together with a 5G innovator like LG U+ to bring exclusive VR experiences to Korean consumers," Hatch's commercial partnerships division director Gunjan Garg said.
