SEOUL -- South Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom, launched a spin-out program called "Stargate" to nurture promising information and communication technologies so that they can quickly grow in the global market and join the unicorn club of tech companies valued at $1 billion.

The program is composed of four stages: verification, market review, technology spin-out and support. "Stargate is a program that combined SK Telecom's expertise to create a global ICT unicorn," said Park Jin-hyo, chief technology officer at SKT's ICT R&D Center, in a ceremony on Thursday.

SK Telecom (SKT) plans to spin out several technologies by the end of next year. Candidates are Optics, an ultra-compact laser optics engine which is eye-safe while supporting 200 lumens of brightness, and automatically focuses. It is suitable for AI speakers and vehicle displays. SKT has techniques to separate vocals and accompaniments from sound sources with artificial intelligence technology.
