SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, will use its 5G technology to live broadcast the primary competition of "The League of Legends", the world's most popular online game developed by American game maker Riot Games, and develop augmented and virtual reality e-sports contents.

ST Telecom (SKT) said Thursday it has forged a sponsorship contract with Riot Games to broadcast the LOL Champions Korea (LCK), which runs two seasons per year and serves as a direct route to qualification for annual world championships. It is the strongest LOL competition in the world, with LCK league teams winning world championships from 2013 through 2017.

LOL is a multiplayer online battle arena video game. According to Amsterdam-based gaming market research company Newzoo, about 100 million users play the game every month. SKT plans to secure additional rights to broadcast international competitions as well as marketing related to 5G by 2020.

Starting in June, SKT aims to broadcast live AR and VR contents of the LCK league and broadcast competition live through its over-the-top (OTT) platform Oksusu. Viewers can zoom in on the broadcast screen with their fingers up to four times without compromising picture quality.

"E-Sports is one of the core contents of 5G," SKT's MNO business head Yoo Young-sang said. "LOL's unique game elements which are creating a sensation around the world and SKT's 5G-based real-life media technology will meet to provide unique customer experiences."
