SEOUL -- The research center of LG Electronics has developed an artificial intelligence chip that could be installed inside various home appliances such as robot cleaners, washers, air conditioners and refrigerators.

Unlike other AI chips placed in external cloud or servers for deep learning, LG said its chip could be installed inside products to increase speed and efficiency. A foreign foundry company will be entrusted with production, the company said, promising to expand solutions utilizing AI through cooperation with other companies, universities and research institutes.

"The AI chip developed this time is designed to provide optimized AI solutions," LG chief technology officer and president Park Il-pyung said in a statement. He said LG would strengthen the function of its ThinQ AI platform.

LG said its AI chip, equipped with an AI processor that imitates the human brain neural network, dramatically improves the processing performance of deep learning algorithms. It strengthens a product's original function by detecting physical and chemical changes and distinguishes space, location and object and users. Characteristics of a user's voice or noise can be recognized.

The chip enables customized AI services that determine situations on its own by comprehensively learning video and voice data, LG said, adding it can learn and infer even when there is no network connection, and protect personal information data within products. The AI chip can be used to correct the distortion of wide-angle lenses and allow users to obtain bright and clear images even in dark places.
