SEOUL -- Hyundai Rotem, a leading manufacturer of rolling stock and defense products in South Korea, partnered with Wind River Systems, an American embedded and mobile software developer, to develop high-speed train signaling devices for the third level of Europe's train control system.

Hyundai Rotem, a unit of South Korea's Hyundai auto group, said Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Wind River, which has unveiled VxWorks, a real-time operating system designed for use in embedded systems requiring real-time, deterministic performance and, in many cases, safety and security certification.

Hyundai Rotem will develop signaling devices for ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 3, which is under development, and Wind River will support a system interface and a real-time operating system by using VxWorks.

ETCS is a legal requirement that new, upgraded or renewed tracks and rolling stock in the European railway system should adopt. With Level 3, ETCS goes beyond pure train protection functionality with the implementation of full radio-based train spacing. Fixed train detection devices are no longer required and trains find their position themselves by means of positioning beacons and via sensors.

Hyundai Rotem said that it would develop a wireless signaling system for ETCS Level 3 that can reduce track maintenance costs, check the location of trains in real time, and improve high-speed track capacity. It requires no train detection devices installed on the track.
