SEOUL -- KT, South Korea's largest telecom company, signed a partnership deal with JW2B, a Japanese production agency, to cooperate in 5G-based media businesses including the operation of K-pop concerts in Japan and the development of augmented reality and virtual reality media content.

KT said in a statement on Friday that it would team up with JW2B to create and distribute K-pop concert content in forms of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) media for 5G-based devices.

"This business agreement with JW2B will introduce a never-seen-before K-pop performance culture in South Korea," KT's content platform business division managing director Jeon Dae-jin was quoted as saying. He said the two companies would try to deliver more vivid performance experiences to customers.

KT's 5G-based K-pop content will be differentiated from previous content using AR and VR technology. The new content will be exclusively released on 5G media platforms such as GiGA Live TV and Olleh TV Mobile. The telecom company would also develop new character mascots to be used in items at K-pop concerts operated by JW2B.

AR and VR use special headsets to provide a 360-degree field of view for viewers using special helmet devices. The next-generation media is ideal for 5G networks.
