SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has collaborated with SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, to introduce a new spectating landscape for motor racing fans by establishing a stable 5G network between base stations and cars traveling in bullet speed.

With thunderous engine sounds, a race car skittered through a race track at a speed of about 210 kilometers per hour (130 miles) at the "Korea International Circuit" in the southwestern county of Yeongam in a promotion video released by Samsung on Wednesday.

The video showed a high-definition real-time cockpit view of the motor vehicle as well as its position on the track and related information such as the durability analysis of tires.

The driver's view and crucial information of the car were relayed in real-time using commercial 5G base stations installed inside the track. Multiple views of the moving car were broadcast live using "T Live Caster 5G", a 5G-based live broadcasting solution developed by SK Telecom (SKT).

The demonstration was carried out to test the limits of Samsung's 5G base stations as well as SKT's 5G broadcasting solution. Samsung said a stable 5G network allowed a maximum download speed of up to one gigabits per second, about 25 times faster than that of the 4G mobile network.

"5G commercial service means much more than just faster speeds. It is a vital engine in transforming digital landscapes to bring enhanced and new business models that had only lived in our imagination," SKT's ICT R&D center head Park Jin-hyo was quoted as saying in Samsung's statement.

Samsung said its bandwidth technology can unlock the full potential of 5G and create innovative uses. Realtime race footages can be delivered to virtual reality (VR) headsets along with a 360-degree angle view of the moving vehicle.

Real-time cockpit view footages are broadcast in motor racing, but their quality is poor due to low data speed. According to Samsung, the equipment and broadcasting solution used in the demonstration allows safe and more effective live streaming from a car accelerating up to 370 kilometers per hour.
