SEOUL -- LG Electronics will target premium TV markets in the United States and Europe by releasing the world's first 88-inch super high-definition 8K organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV this month. The new TV features Google's artificial intelligence voice assistant, enabling users to utilize it as a home network hub.

LG said in a statement on Tuesday that "LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K", a premium 88-inch OLED TV with 8K display, would be released in some 10 countries including the U.S., Britain and France in September.

The company said the world's first 8K OLED TV has a 7,680 X 4,320 resolution display which can display images about four times clearer than 4K (3,840 X2,160 resolution) displays. It was released in South Korea in August with a price tag of 50 million won.

LG will engage in a free-for-all battle to capture the hearts of consumers at this year's Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA), an annual electronics fair, scheduled to open in Berlin on September 6.

To broaden its presence in the global market, Samsung Electronics will also showcase premium quantum-dot display (QLED) 8K TVs at the world's top electronics fair. While LG focuses on honing its OLED technology, Samsung has focused on the development of QLED which uses nano-crystals to enhance the brightness and color of its display.

As an aggressive move to take the upper hand in the 8K TV market, Samsung has established "8K Association", a union of TV manufacturers which promotes 8K technology and pushes for the adoption of performance standards and specifications for 8K TVs. The association consists of Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Panasonic, Intel, Hisence and TCL.

Sharp, a Japanese-Taiwanese multinational technology company, is also gearing up to join the 8K battle with a 120-inch 8K TV capable of connecting to a 5G mobile communications network. In 2017, Sharp released the world's first 8K TV with a liquid crystal display.
