SEOUL -- Embracing new technologies and advanced digital devices, Seoul National University Hospital, one of South Korea's oldest and biggest hospitals, moved closer to a smart digital operating system limitingly for surgery, urology and uterology.

The hospital said that facilities were renovated to set up ten "smart" operating rooms where laparoscopic systems, image transmission and the control of medical devices and the environment for operations can be coordinated and integrated into a network for easy control.

A pre-set function allows medical device settings to be stored in advance depending on the types of surgery and surgeons to provide a customized operating environment, reduce the preparation time and enable smooth operations.

"We expect to provide comfortable and safe services to patients based on smart operating rooms, while creating the best surgical environment for medical staff, ultimately taking them one step closer to the accurate treatment and quick recovery of serious patients," said Seoul National University Hospital president Kim Yon-su.

All monitors provide a picture quality of 4K or higher, and images of examination can be checked directly with surgical monitors, minimizing the movement of medical staff and shortening the operation time.

3D endoscopic equipment increased the accuracy of surgery and a blue light system maximized contrast to heighten concentration and psychological stability. Various wires and tubes were removed from the floor and a pendant system equipped with gas and electrical facilities was introduced to prevent infection and ensure safety for medical staff.

Doctors say a true smart operating room should be connected and equipped with robot cameras capable of creating a GPS-like map projected onto a patient’s body, imaging equipment available on the operating table and artificial intelligence technology to let surgeons tap into big data.
