SEOUL -- The southern port city of Busan was selected as South Korea's testbed to demonstrate drone technologies using artificial intelligence and big data.

Busan said on Monday that the port city with a population of some 3.4 million was selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to establish a testbed and demonstrate drone technologies that are used for administrative purposes such as the monitoring and preventing of bushfires and landslides.

A consortium involving drone companies will demonstrate the use of infrastructure and drones specialized in monitoring and surveillance to prevent disasters.

Commercial and industrial drones have become popular in South Korea. However, because of strong regulations against flying gadgets in urban areas, the use of drones is currently limited to filming, crop-dusting and bushfire monitoring in rural areas. The government has designated small areas where recreational drone flyers could enjoy their hobby activities.
