SEOUL -- LGU+, a South Korean mobile carrier, has released a 5G network service for corporate use to connect smart factories and terminal devices such as tablet PCs and personal digital assistant (PDA) devices to a commercial 5G network that is faster and more stable.

LGU+ said on Thursday that the corporate 5G network service is separated from other networks used by ordinary smartphone users.

"The dedicated network is ideal for industrial machinery such as harbor cranes and minesweepers that need accurate controls," an LGU+ official said in a statement. The corporate 5G network supports data analytics to manage the quality of production at smart factories.

The 5G network can reach a peak data transfer speed of 20GB per second. Because of its low-latency and fast data transfer speed characteristics, many heavy equipment makers and smart factory operators hook their equipment to 5G networks for remote operations.

Last year, Doosan Infracore demonstrated the operation of Concept-X, an automated construction system that used a 5G mobile communication network and a drone equipped with a 3D scanner to share land data with other equipment.
