SEOUL -- Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world's largest shipbuilder, secured an order worth 220 billion won ($179 million) from European clients to build two very large crude carriers that will be installed with scrubbers to meet new rules imposed by a U.N. maritime safety agency. The vessels will be delivered from the first half of 2022.

Ships can reduce the levels of sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by installing an exhaust gas cleaning system such as SOx scrubbers. The scrubber technology works by passing the dirty exhaust gas stream created by the engine through chambers that contain a carefully generated "scrubbing cloud" of water.

The new order came two weeks after the shipbuilder won an order worth 105 billion won to build two large crude carriers for a European client.
