SEOUL -- KCC, a top provider of construction materials and paints, has unveiled a diversified lineup of its functional bio-paint that can prevent the spread of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic viruses and microorganisms.

KCC released the first model of its functional paint with anti-virus, antibacterial, and anti-fungus performance in December 2020, saying it can eradicate more than 99 percent of viruses within six hours. It is an eco-friendly product that lowered volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and did not use harmful heavy metals. On February 19, the company released four types of bio-painting.

General industrial painting for automobiles and machinery can be applied to medical and other multi-purpose facilities. The paint for plastic materials can be applied to IT, healthcare and beauty devices. Particle painting, which is a method of spraying fine powder particles on the surface, can be used for automated teller machines, fitness equipment, steel furniture and doors. Pre-coated metal paint can be applied directly to steel sheets in the form of coils for home appliances and interior and exterior construction materials.

Due to a COVID-19 pandemic, various materials have been developed to hinder the growth and spread of microorganisms. KCC's domestic rival Samhwa has developed an anti-viral paint made from acrylic resin that creates a strong layer of washable film which is hard to contaminate. Antibacterial films and materials are widely used in South Korea for elevator cabins, door handles and other vulnerable places to prevent the invasion of viruses.
