SEOUL -- Hyosung Heavy Industries, an electrical power equipment manufacturer in South Korea, has localized a medium-voltage direct current transmission and distribution system, which is considered as an option for enhancing transfer capacity and providing increased power quality at distribution networks. At lower voltage and power levels, the distribution of medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) has been proposed for offshore wind farms.

The need for MVDC technology has been raised to expand the renewable energy industry, but South Korea has been reliant on foreign equipment. Demands for renewable energy equipment are growing in South Korea because of a government campaign to replace fossil-fueled power plants with clean and renewable energy. President Moon Jae-in has called for a carbon-neutral country by 2050.

Hyosung Heavy said on February 25 that it has signed a contract with the Green Energy Institute to supply a 30-megawatt MVDC system capable of supplying electricity to 67,000 households at an industrial complex in Naju, 280 kilometers (174 miles) southwest of Seoul, by the end of this year.

With its MVDC technology, Hyosung said the domestic power industry will be able to replace imports and reduce costs. "As a total energy solution provider in the power industry, we will lead the next-generation global market," said Hyosung Group chairman Cho Hyun-jun.

Demands for renewable energy equipment are growing in South Korea because of a government campaign to replace fossil-fueled power plants with clean and renewable energy. President Moon Jae-in has called for a carbon-neutral country by 2050 through the establishment of zero-emission infrastructure and the development of renewable energy technologies.
