Samsung Electronics Co. said it will build its second plant to produce mobile handsets in Vietnam.

The mobile phone production line will be built in Thai Nguyen Province, northern Vietnam, the company said on Feb. 7.

If construction of the Thai Nguyen plant is completed, Vietnam will become the largest mobile phone producing country in the world.

Plans to construct the Thai Nguyen production line was finalized four months after Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee visited Vietnam in October last year to discuss matters regarding the Thai Nguyen plant with Vietnamese officials, Samsung officials said.

Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV) signed with a management company of the Yen Binh Industrial Zone in the province to lease 50 square kilometers of land, a site larger than Samsung Electronics' production line in the Yen Phong Industrial Zone, Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, they said.

Currently, the Bac Ninh plant with 24,000 employees produces 150 million handsets per year.

Samsung Electronics has eight overseas mobile handset production lines, including the Bac Ninh plant, its largest production line abroad.

According to sources, Samsung Electronics plans to invest about $700 million for its second plant in the Southeast Asian country.
