Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Feb. 12 that Japan is considering unilaterally imposing sanctions on North Korea, after a man-made tremor was detected in northeastern North Korea earlier in the day, foreign media reported.

A couple of hours after the detection, North Korea announced that it successfully conducted its third nuclear test.

Speaking at the lower house, Abe said Japan will seek close communication with the United States, South Korea and China on the issue, the report said.

The Japanese government convened a national security meeting.
