South Korean President-elect Park Geun-hye said on Feb. 12 that the incoming government will not tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea, her spokeswoman said.

Park made the remarks, condemning a nuclear test North Korea conducted earlier in the day in defiance of stong warnings from the international community, the spokeswoman, Cho Yoon-sun, said after Park's meeting with transition committee officials at the transition team's office in Seoul.

"North Korea should be aware that there is nothing it can gain from such a provocative act," Park said.

The President-elect said that based on strong deterrence, the incoming government will bolster cooperation with the international community for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Park said the North Korean nuclear test "poses a serious threat to the Korean Peninsula and international peace, hampers trust-building between the two Koreas and is an act that mars efforts for peace."

Park is set to be sworn in as the country's first female president on Feb. 25.
