President-elect Park Geun-hye on Feb. 19 named Ju Chul-ki, a former career diplomat, as senior presidential secretary for foreign affairs and national security, a spokesman said.

Lee Jung-hyun, a long-time aide to Park, was appointed senior presidential secretary for political affairs, transition team spokesman Yoon Chang-jung said.

Other appointees included:

Cho Won-dong, president of the Korea Institute of Public Finance, as senior presidential secretary for economic affairs.

Choi Sung-jae, emeritus professor at Seoul National University, as senior presidential secretary for employment and welfare.

Mo Chul-min, president of Seoul Arts Center, as senior presidential secretary for education and cultural affairs.

Choi Soon-hong, chief of the information communication technology bureau at the U.N. headquarters in New York, as senior presidential secretary for future strategies.

The appointments were the last in a series of nominations for the incoming Cabinet and presidential office. Park is set to be sworn in as the country's first female president on Feb. 25.

Park is expected to begin work with outgoing Cabinet ministers even after her inauguration as National Assembly confirmation hearings for Cabinet nominees could take up to 20 days, observers said.

Moreover, the ruling and opposition parties have failed to narrow differences over Park’s proposal to change the governmental organization, they said.

Major bone of contention is whether the foreign ministry's trade negotiating functions should be transferred to the commerce ministry or not.
