A garment factory in Savar, Bangladesh collapsed on Wednesday. The first reports said that 149 were killed.

However, the death rate went up rapidly after the Bangladesh authorities went through the rubbles of the ruins and found 126 more bodies; the total of 275 bodies were found, officially marking the incident Bangladesh’s worst disaster.

Savar Upazila of Dhaka District is known for garment industry (manufacturing for major clothing brands) but it does not provide safe working condition for its workers. The fire erupted 5 months ago that killed 112 people brought Savar Upazila factories inhumane working condition to light.

A rescuing team was formed to save any survivors and retrieve the dead bodies from the collapsed factory building. Some of the survivors were buried so deeply under so could not be rescued immediately. The effort to save more will continue.

The factory housed 3,122 workers so the fatality rate is expected to go up as the search continues.

Now Bangladesh authorities are after the factory owner who constructed the parts of building illegally, which could have caused the huge collapse.
