Park Ji-sung, one of South Korea’s biggest football icons, retired from the sport Wednesday.

Park, a former English Premier Leaguer who played his last official match on May 3 with the Dutch club PVS Eindhoven, made the announcement in a news conference held at the JS Football Center in Suwon, about 45km south of Seoul.

The 33-year-old said he plans to tie the knot with Kim Min-ji, 29, who was formerly an announcer at SBS TV, at a hotel in Seoul on July 27.

Park, a midfielder, rejoined PSV on loan from English club Queens Park Rangers for the 2013–14 season.

He became the first South Korean to play in English Premier League in 2005 when he joined Manchester United.

Park was a member of the South Korean national squad that finished fourth at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was
nicknamed “Oxygen Tank” in South Korea and "Three Lung Park" in Manchester.
