South Korea imports 27,716 tons of wine in 2013

Imports of wine have risen for the past six years. Data released by the Korea Customs Service Friday showed that South Korea imported 27,716 tons of wine worth US$164.1 million last year, compared with 19,192 tons worth $107.2 million tallied in 2009.

In the first nine months of this year, wine imports reached 21,375 tons. "If such an upward trend continues, wine imports will exceed the 28,000 tons level," the customs office said.

Chilean wine took the lion's share of 45.5 percent or 7,210 tons of the total wine imports in 2013, up 45.5 percent from 4,956 tons in 2009, while imports of French wine soared 34.7 percent to 3,761 tons during the period, according to the data.

Imports of Italian and U.S. wine jumped 59.5 percent to 4,735 tons and 41.8 percent to 3,372 tons, respectively.
