Samsung showed off its 16 terabyte (TB)- an actual capacity of 15.36TB - solid state drive (SSD) at the Flash Memory Summit in California last year, and the tech giant had officially announced the release of the world’s largest capacity SSD.
SSD usage had been rising in last few years, mainly because the SSD provide faster reading and writing capabilities when compared to hard drives. The 2.5-inch sized 16TB SSD can be used in personal computers but they are ideal for servers since they can process much more data over a period of time in comparison to conventional storage drives. Plus, more 2.5-inch drives can fit into server racks than 3.5-inch drives.
Samsung managed to manufacture the world’s largest capacity SSD by cramping 512 pieces of 256 gigabyte (Gb) vertical negative-AND (NAND) memory chips, which have the twice the capacity of chips other companies manufacture.
According to Samsung, the 16TB SSD will not fail in everyday use of writing and reading data, and the drive will be provided with a backup software in case of blackouts and unintended power cuts which could cause drive roll-backs or data loss.
Price and exact release dates of the 16TB SSD drive are not yet announced by Samsung.
