A 21-year-old man blew up some furniture at his apartment when he tried to light a cigarette after inhaling about 20 canisters of butane gas. He miraculously escaped unharmed.

The man, identified by his surname Choi, was questioned by police on Monday on charges of mishandling chemical substances and arson. He allegedly inhaled about 20 canisters of butane gas in his one-room apartment in Gwangju, some 265 kilometers (164 miles) south of Seoul.

Police said the explosion erupted when Choi lit a lighter to smoke. Luckily, it did not cause a fire but damaged a door, windows and an air conditioner. During an inspection by firemen, he tried to sneak out of the crime scene with a bag full of empty gas canisters.

Butane gas, normally used for fuel, is a highly hallucinogenic substance. Canisters contain materials that would cause nausea and other painful side effects to prevent people from inhaling gas.
