Actor Park Bo-gum was selected as the prize winner of this year's Korea Tourism Awards for his contribution to promoting South Korea's tourism abroad as one of Hallyu (Korean cultural wave) stars.

The 24-year-old was to receive a special prize on Tuesday in an awarding event hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as the state-run Korea Tourism Organization. "Park Bo-gum has made great contributions to promoting South Korea to the world as a Hallyu star," the ministry said in a statement.

Park was among 13 awardees including famous tourist attractions, programs, and organizations. He gained popularity by appearing in a series of hit dramas such as "Reply 1988" and "Love in the Moonlight" in 2016 and became a young mainstream actor representing South Korea's entertainment scene.

Other awardees included the port city of Gunsan, some 179 kilometers (111 miles) southwest of Seoul, Nami Island east of Seoul, and Hwadam Botanic Garden. Gunsan operates a tourist program called "Time Travel" that leads visitors to well-preserved old buildings from the Japanese colonial era (1910-1945).
