SEOUL -- LG Electronics will unveil a "five-eyed" smartphone in a desperate attempt to recharge its troubled mobile phone business. The strategic model will feature a triple-lens rear camera and a front camera with double lenses.

LG said in a statement that at a conference in Seoul on October 4, it would showcase "V40" with five lenses. Prototype smartphones with multiple lenses have been released, but V40 would be the first to be mass-produced.

"We will maximize the consumer utility of V40 by providing a differentiated camera feature," an LG official was quoted as saying. Details such as price were not disclosed. V40, powered by a Qualcomm 845 Snapdragon processor chipset, would have a 6.4-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) display and a 300mAh battery.

In October, Samsung Electronics plans to release a budget smartphone with a triple-lens rear camera and a single-lens front camera. LG has been in the red for five straight quarters and changed the head of its mobile business division in December last year after its failed strategy in star marketing and high price setting.
