SEOUL -- The South Korean branch of Intel called for the cost-efficient design of data centers, citing an explosive investment to handle a huge volume of data to be created by fifth-generation (5G) mobile service networks.

Intel Korea told reporters on Tuesday that the global information technology (IT) industry would invest heavily in developing hardware for 5G mobile networks to cope with a shift in the paradigm of wireless technology. South Korea is competing with China and other countries to commercialize 5G services next year.

Most of the investment will be used to set up data centers, the tech company said, citing a report by Moor Insights & Strategy, a U.S.-based technology market research firm, that about 56 percent of $326 billion, the total amount of money to be invested, would be spent on the development of 5G hardware in 2025

"5G devices will generate a huge amount of data, so investment in data centers will increase explosively. It is also important to design cost-effective data centers," an Intel official said.
