SEOUL -- A picture taken by a mountain climber showed a Brocken specter which is the magnified shadow of an observer cast upon clouds opposite of the Sun's direction. The specter appears when the sun shines from behind the observer, who is looking down from a ridge or peak into mist or fog.

The picture was taken on the 1,915 meter-high peak of Jirisan, South Korea's second tallest mountain. The climber's head was surrounded by the halo-like rings of colored light forming a glory, which appears opposite of the Sun's direction.

The phenomenon can appear on any misty mountainside or cloud bank, but the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, have created a local legend.
