SEOUL -- South Korea's trade watchdog will open a preliminary anti-dumping probe into uncoated papers shipped by China, Indonesia and Brazil, which account for about 40 percent of the domestic market.
Uncoated papers are used for letterheads and compliment slips. Coated papers are coated by a compound or polymer to yield certain qualities and reduced ink absorbency, while uncoated papers allow the ink to bleed into the paper giving rich full colors.
The domestic market for uncoated papers was estimated at 400 billion won ($354 million) in 2017. The Korea Trade Commission said Monday its probe followed complaints from Hankuk Paper that cheap imports hurt its business. The watchdog will decide whether to impose preliminary anti-dumping duties after a three-month probe. A financial decision will come six months later.
