SEOUL -- South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom strengthened its partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG, the largest telecom provider in Europe, through a strategic cross-investment agreement to strengthen their competitiveness in fifth-generation (5G) mobile services.

The agreement came at talks between Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges and SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho in Seoul on Monday. The two companies are in the process of testing a quantum cryptographic communication system developed by SK Telecom.

The two companies said in a statement that SK Telecom would invest in MobiledgeX, an edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom and based in California, while the Germany company would invest the same amount in ID Quantique (IDQ), a Swiss company acquired by SK Telecom in February. They would share technologies.

Mobile edge computing technologies can reduce data transfer time. Quantum cryptography allows the completion of various cryptographic tasks that are proven or conjectured to be impossible using classical communication. IDQ provides quantum key distribution systems and quantum safe network encryption.

SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom plan to offer specialized 5G services with ultra-low latency while addressing potential security threats.
