SEOUL -- In an effort to phase out old military analog radio transceivers, South Korea will produce home-made digital equipment capable of transmitting voice and data together.
LIG Nex1, a defense contractor, said Wednesday that the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), a state body controlled by the defense ministry, endorsed a 1.6 trillion won ($1.4 billion) project to introduce tactical multi-band and multi-role radio (TMMR) transceivers.
Unlike PRC-999K, an analog military radio transceiver which was developed in the 1990s and only provides voice transmission, TMMR can control radio bandwidths and provide easy maintenance and performance enhancements via software upgrades.
LIG said that TMMR transceivers are designed for a network-based battlefield communications system. Because it can transmit voice and data at the same time, soldiers can communicate and share information to roll out a joint tactical operation.
